Social Welfare Programs

At Magbit Canada, we believe in strengthening Israeli society, particularly by enhancing peripheral and underprivileged communities. Such efforts create greater opportunities for community residents, while boosting Jewish unity and global Jewish identity. Therefore, we are committed to developing and supporting a host of social welfare programs that cater to disadvantaged segments of the Israeli population. In 2006 alone, we channeled over $1 million in Canadian investments to a range of cooperative and innovative programs throughout Israel that focus on immigrant absorption, population growth, economic development, educational advancement, and social needs.

Promoting the Periphery

Stimulating regional development, particularly in Israel’s northern and southern regions, is of primary importance to Magbit Canada. Within the Partnership 2000 framework, we have identified the most pressing social and economic needs in deprived areas in the Galilee Panhandle in the north, Eilat in the south, and Be’er Sheva in the northern Negev. In addition, between 1977 and 1990, we successfully twinned Canadian cities with over a dozen development areas in the Negev and central Israel within the framework of the Project Renewal initiative.

With much of our efforts focused on children and youth, we have established after-school home environment centres – a “home away from home” for at-risk youth – featuring hot meals, academic tutoring and extra-curricular activities. In addition, we support a range of social enrichment programs for cultivating young leadership, encouraging civic responsibility and helping develop community ties.

Working together with Diaspora communities to improve the quality of life for underprivileged and peripheral populations throughout Israel, we are promoting our shared values and advancing Jewish and Zionist identity for the next generation.

As the Canadian Jewish Federations representative in Israel, we disperse and monitor funds,
and touch the lives of thousands of Israelis and Canadians daily through our
projects, programs and other activities.
