Absorption Centres

One of Israel’s most valuable assets since its establishment in 1948 has been the multitude of immigrants who have made their way from across the globe. While these newcomers require different levels of support upon their arrival, many – particularly those from poor and distressed countries – need temporary accommodations to smooth their entry into Israeli society.

Together with the State of Israel and the Jewish Agency for Israel, Canadian Jewry helped establish absorption centres that have served as the initial “home away from home” for tens of thousands of new immigrants. These centres offer high-quality housing for immigrants during at least the first half-year after their arrival. The facilities provide not only a roof for newcomers, but also a base where they can become acquainted with their new land and its customs, learn Hebrew, and find employment.

In addition, Magbit Canada has built four Beit Canada (Canadian Home) absorption centres in Israel – two in Jerusalem, including a hostel for single immigrants, and one each in Ashdod and Ashkelon. We’re proud of our role in easing the arrival of thousands of immigrants from the former Soviet Union, Ethiopia, Canada and elsewhere, creating a positive environment as they embark upon their new lives in Israel.

As the Canadian Jewish Federations representative in Israel, we disperse and monitor funds,
and touch the lives of thousands of Israelis and Canadians daily through our
projects, programs and other activities.
