Synagogues
Helping perpetuate the memory of extinct Canadian congregations, Magbit Canada has supported the creation of a number of synagogues in Israel. Many of these congregations were forced to close down and sell their property due to the mass migration of members to larger Jewish communities in Canada and elsewhere. But in an effort to preserve the name and memory of these congregations, Magbit Canada has collected the funds raised from their sale and helped establish synagogues in Israel. Often built in young, growing communities, these synagogues not only bear the name of the former congregation, but also contain Torah scrolls, prayer books and other religious articles that were used in the past. As such, we are able to link a rich part of Canadian Jewish history with the thriving present and future of the Jewish state.
