Etgarim Sderot (Challenges)
Background: Sderot has a large population of families who are in a constant financial struggle. As a result parents spend many hours working while kids in various ages are often left unsupervised without an educational framework.
Need: In light of the security crisis many of these kids have turned to violent behavior patterns and were involved in acts of vandalism namely to defuse their stress and anger.
Response: Etgraim Sderot is a project that offers a positive channel for youth and community members to diffuse tensions and release energy through:
- Physical activities
- Sports
- environment and nature programs
Focusing on problem solving and team work which are essential values and life skills to be instilled. This project has been proven to be effective in engaging youth in meaningful activities in after school frame work.
Target population:
Elementary school students during school hours
50 teenagers between ages 12-18
Example of activity:
Group is split into two teams both are faced with a physical challenge. Each team needs to come up with an action plan and execute it. Participants will be evaluated on their team work, cooperation and ability to meet their goals.
Suggested budget:

Computers and Photography
Background: Sderot has a large population of families who are struggling financially. As a result parents spend many hours working while kids in various ages are often left unsupervised without an educational framework.
Need: In light of the security crisis many of these kids spend too many hours at home usually alone avoiding the outdoors because of the security situation. Many of them lack any after school social involvement.
Response:Computers and Photography is a project that offers an opportunity to teenagers who struggle with the security situation "quietly" to get out of the house meet others like them and engage in an activity they feel comfortable with. They will broaden their knowledge studying:
- Office
- Photoshop
- Basic course in photography
- Expressing their inner world in writing
- An exhibition inspired by a workshop on personal values
Target population: 25 teenagers between ages 14-16
Example of activity: Each participant has an assignment to photograph a picture that reflects his life in Sderot and present it to the group.

Youth Movements
Background & Need: There is an estimated population of approximately 1,800 teenagers living in Sderot today. Almost 40% of them study out of the town and commute in a daily basis to their schools. Getting youth engaged and socially involved is a challenge in any community. In Sderot, due to the on-going security crisis it is important to appeal to as many teenagers as possible and help them regain their independence and confidence to have a positive teenage experience.
Response: There a 2 main youth movements that operate in Sderot today:
- Bnei Akiva Harel – appealing to the national religious community
- HaTzofim and HaNor HaOved Ve Halomed appealing to secular population
Which provide extra physical, emotional, and spiritual support to participants through strengthen valuable social and educational opportunities these peer-led programs can offer youth.
Target population: Elementary school students. To date there are 350 teenagers that are involved on a weekly basis in various activities initiated by youth movements.
Example of activity: Weekly activity will involve teenagers planning an activity for the elementary school students. Before Chanukah participants gave out to the elderly in the community a plant in appreciation of their contribution of the establishment of the town.

Sderot Student Council
Background & Need: There is an estimated population of approximately 2,200 teenagers living in Sderot today. Through out the last 8 years they have experienced much civic awareness due to the security situation Sderot has been dragged into. Many have been frustrated for years with the governmental with regards to bringing about a solution to the security threat.
Response: Youth have the energy, the motivation and the drive to effect great change. In order to empower the local youth of Sderot to be more effective in their activism, we would like to create a city council. The council will receive mentoring and guidance to become a viable community leadership body.
Target population: 20 youth leaders representing 600 youth of the formal and informal educational frameworks.
Example of activity: Bi-weekly meetings and being involved in raising awareness and encouraging response to the needs of teenagers in town. Initiating and planning activities such as:
- A slogan for bumper stickers raising solidarity of greater Israel with Sderot.
- Young ambassadors initiative - during the height of the security crisis the members of the student council contacted school in central Israel and came to give talks in school explaining to their peers what it means to grow up in Sderot under the constant threat of rocket attacks.
- In charge of creating an annual work plan for the youth in Sderot

"Afiki Orr"Club House fort Ethiopian Youth
Background: There are 180 Ethiopian families living in Sderot most are single households (mothers).
There are nearly 90 kids in this community ages ranging 12-18. Most of these families are in a constant state of financial struggle in addition to dealing with the expected hardships that derive from immigration- educational gaps, cultural differences and others.
Need/Challenge: Due to the economic hardships at home and cultural differences most of these kids do not belong to an after school framework and are free to wonder the streets. In there is an academic gap which in most cases cannot be addressed by the parents.
Response: A club house for this target population would serve as a welcoming space where kids can enjoy:
- Assistance with homework and tutoring
- Social and cultural programs
- Workshops and activities in various topics
- Judaic-themed programs
Most important this club house will prevent these kids from wondering the streets and getting in trouble.
Target population: 35-40 children four times a week 12- 18.
Example of activity: In addition to the regular services that are offered the club house also offers special programs around the holidays and when schools are not in session, including day trips and educational tours for kids and families.

Netivim Centre – Centre for Young Adults
Background: There are 7,000 young adults living in Sderot between the ages 21-35 (post military service). Like most peripheral towns in Israel, most of the population of young adults in Sderot chooses to move to central Israel seeking higher education and better paying job prospects. Consequently more than 80% leave town to get services that provided in the region.
Need/Challenge: Although we accept that the movement of young people will always be towards main cities (central Israel). This paradigm needs to be changed; seeing more young adults choose to stay in town, without compromising in education and employment opportunities, along with either returning home or even staying.
Response: A centre for young adults has been established in town – the centre is the only space allocated to this populations and it is a one-stop centre where the following services and information is provided:
- Academic and career consulting
- Vocational training
- Social and Cultural
Target population: Young adults post military service.
Example of activity:
- Job fair – where young adults can learn about job opportunities in the region.
- One-on-one consultation on academic opportunities.

Scholarship for 20 potential college students: CAD 25,000.
